Lord’s Resistance Army

The Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) is a millenarian religious cult and rebel militia group operating in Northern Uganda and parts of Sudan. It was founded in 1987 by Joseph Kony and for more than two decades has waged a campaign of horrific violence and terror that has claimed the lives of thousands of children. Over the years, it has abducted and enslaved tens of thousands of children and forced some of them to be child soldiers while forcing others to be the child brides of LRA commanders. Abducted children caught trying to escape are murdered. The Lord’s Resistance Army is notorious for its widespread practice of murder, rape, torture, mutilation and child sexual abuse. In 2005, the International Criminal Court indicted Kony and other LRA leaders for crimes against humanity.
